Now, it seems that the BS6 Tata Hexa might finally be round the corner. There are now rumors that the updated crossover MPV could be launched later in 2021. When Tata Motors showcased the BS6 Hexa as the Safari Edition at the Auto Expo, it was expected that the 'Safari' nameplate would only live on as a special version of Tata's 4x4 vehicles. Of course, we now know that Tata had completely different plans for the iconic 'Safari' nameplate in India.

The primary change on the Tata Hexa 2021 will obviously be an updated engine to meet the BS6 emission standards. It is expected to continue with its 2.2L diesel engine, which in BS4-spec produced 156hp and 400Nm of peak torque. The engine came mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission and it even came with an optional four-wheel drive system for the manual variant. Tata could be offering the 4WD system on the automatic variant as well this time around.

It is these four-wheel drive variants that we expect to be christened the Safari Edition, as was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. The model showcased at the Auto Expo came finished in a new dark green paint shade along with black alloy wheels. The interiors too were done up in lighter colors. We expect both of these changes to be featured on the production-spec model as well.

We do not expect any other significant change of the BS6 Tata Hexa. It will be Tata's only body-on-frame and 4x4 vehicle when it when it goes on sale later this year, until obviously a 4x4 variant of the new Safari come up. Prices are expected to start from around INR 14 lakh (ex-showroom) and it will rival the likes of the Mahindra Marazzo and the XUV500, the Toyota Innova Crysta, as well as the MG Hector Plus.

Last month, Tata Motors produced not a single unit of the Hexa. The sales count (wholesale) was also 0 units. The company will resume production of the Hexa only after it is ready with its BS6 upgrade. Apart from the Hexa, all other old models that were planned to continue being sold after the BS6 emission norms kick in on 1 April were upgraded before the deadline. The recently launched Altroz was BS6 compliant from day one.

Tata Motors sold the Hexa with two BS4 2.2-litre diesel engines: Varicor 320 and Varicor 400. Both these engines should be upgraded to BS6.

The 2.2L Varicor 320 engine produced 150 PS at 4,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1,500-3,000 rpm. It was available with only a 5-speed manual transmission. The 2.2L Varicor 400 engine developed 156 PS at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1,750-2,500 rpm. It was available with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Buyers going for the former could opt for a 4x4 system in their crossover.

Tata Motors plans to launch a BS6 Hexa Safari also in the coming months. The company had showcased the same in concept form at Auto Expo 2020 in February. The concept version was fitted with the Varicor 400 engine, a 6-speed manual transmission and a 4x4 system.

The Tata Hexa Safari Concept featured a special green body paint, gloss black radiator grille frame, mirrors, door handles and tailgate garnish, roof rails and extra black body cladding. Its exclusive styling made it more relatable to adventure vehicles.

Tata Motors displayed the Hexa Safari Concept at the Expo and confirmed that this will not be the final appearance of the iconic 'Safari' nameplate. Below is what Pratap Bose, VP - Global Design, Tata Motors, said on that matter:

We have 3 (iconic) names in the SUV segment – Sierra, Safari and Sumo. Safari we’ve merged it with the Hexa. The Hexa or any 4X4-able vehicle will be a ‘Safari’ edition.

The Tata Hexa Safari Concept is based on the BS-IV Tata Hexa 4x4. Apart from the heightened level of ruggedness and off-road abilities, the concept features very tough looking exteriors to complement its off-road adventure prowess. On the inside, it features special 'Safari Edition' badging on the driver side of the dashboard and a lighter seat upholstery which gives the cabin a more elegant and classier appeal.

The Tata Hexa is currently available with a BS-IV 2.2-litre diesel unit in two versions: 150 PS/320 Nm and 156 PS/400 Nm. The transmission options include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. It seems like with the BS-VI upgrade, it will become the first model to adopt the Safari suffix for 4x4 configurations.

Tata Motors says that the Hexa Safari Concept is a precursor to the BS-VI Hexa, which it plans to launch a little after the BS-VI emission norms come into effect this April. Apparently, the company will toughen up the Hexa along with the BS-VI upgrade.

The Tata Hexa Safari Concept is based on the BS-IV Tata Hexa 4x4 and has a heightened level of ruggedness to show-off its off-roading capabilities. Its foliage colour, the company says, is inspired by the earthy tones of the outdoors. Also different on the concept are the unique roof rails. Inside, there’s special Safari Edition badge on the driver-side dashboard and also a lighter the seat upholstery aimed at making the cabin look more elegant.

The BS-VI Tata Hexa is expected to be powered by a revised version of the old model’s 2.2-litre diesel engine that is available in 150 PS/320 Nm and 156 PS/400 Nm versions. The transmission choices should be the same (6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic). As in the old model, the 4WD system will likely be optional.

The Pro Edition packs start from as low as INR 29,999 for the Tiago and the Tigor, and extend up to INR 1,09,999 for the Harrier. The Pro package for the Harrier includes additional features such as automatic sunroof, sunshades, front parking sensor, mobile holder wireless, app-based TPMS, ambient mood lighting, bonnet mascot, humanity line chrome and it even includes chrome exhaust tips.

The Pro Edition accessories will made available across all Tata Motors dealers in India through Tata Motors Genuine Accessories. Furthermore, Tata Motors has even launched the ‘Festival of Cars’ campaign where it is offering benefits of upto INR 1,65,000 on its vehicles.

Commenting on the announcement of the accessory package launch, Mr. S.N Barman - Vice President, Sales, Marketing & Customer Support, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “To add more cheer to this year’s festive season, we are delighted to announce the launch of the Pro Edition accessory packs for our valuable customers."

In other updates, Tata has also launched the Harrier Black Edition, priced at INR 16.76 lakh.

Barman recently told The Hindu BusinessLine that Tata Motors is ready with the technology required for BS-VI the BS-VI transition on the technology front and that the Hexa is going to be available post BS-VI. The company will likely sell the Hexa as a three-row PV positioned below the Buzzard (provisional name), which it plans to launch by the end of this calendar year. It could start targeting fleet operators with a special variant configured to meet their needs at a lower cost as well. For reference, the BS-IV Hexa is priced from INR 13.26 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Tata Motors is not worried about the future of diesel engines when it comes to big models. Commenting on that matter, Barman said:

“My strong belief is that for the bigger diesel cars (1.5 litre engine and above), there is no alternative. If you look at the fuel efficiency per se (for engines above 1.5 litre), it is substantially lower for petrol engines than diesel engines. The running cost on the petrol engine in the bigger cars is always going to be higher than the diesel engine. It makes more sense to have diesel engines during the BS-VI regime as well because one can always recover the additional cost of Rs. 1-1.5 lakh.”

What Tata Motors is worried about with respect to BS-VI diesel engines, is if they'll be feasible for its entry-level models. From the Tiago to the Hexa, the entire Tata Motors PV line-up is available with a diesel engine either as an option or as standard. Previous reports have said that owing to the low demand and the high upgrade cost for the 1.2-litre Revotorq diesel engine the company offers in the Tiago and Tigor, it will discontinue this engine by March 2019.

The 2019 Tata Hexa is available in five colour options and a dual-tone paint scheme for the top variants. The seven-seater SUV has even gained a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto. The new unit offers a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and is standard across all trims.

On the inside, the 2019 Tata Hexa features chrome trim around the AC vents and a piano black steering wheel bezel in the high-end trims. Interestingly, the entry-level XE trim, which received a price hike of more than INR 41,000 in January this year, has been discontinued. In all likelihood, this has been done to widen the price gap between the recently launched Harrier and the company's flagship SUV.

With the XE grade no longer available, the entry-level 2.2-litre Varicor 320 oil-burner, which produced 150 PS and 320 Nm, has also been binned. Hence, the 2019 Tata Hexa is available only with the 2.2-litre Varicor 400 diesel engine that produces 156 PS at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm at 1,750-2,500 rpm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic unit. 4WD is available on the top-spec XT grade with the manual gearbox.

Compared to the MY2018 Tata Hexa, the updated version is up to INR 20,000 costlier. That said, On the XT-grade models have been affected by this increment, while the prices of the XM, XMA and XM+ grades have been left untouched.

Speaking on the price hike, Mr Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, has said -

The changing market conditions, rising input costs and various external economic factors have compelled us to consider this price increase. We are confident of maintaining our growth trajectory in the coming months on the back of our robust portfolio consisting of segment-leading products like Tiago, Hexa, Tigor, Nexon and Harrier.

In January 2019, Tata Motors hiked the prices of the Hexa. At the time of the launch of the Harrier, the Hexa had a starting price of INR 12.57 lakh. However, prices of the Hexa were increased by more than INR 41,000 soon after the launch of the production-spec H5X.

Earlier this month, Tata Motors revealed four new models at the Geneva Motor Show 2019, which include: Altroz, Altroz EV, Buzzard and H2X Concept. The Tata Altroz is the production version of the Tata 45X concept and is expected to launch in the June-July period, while the Buzzard is the 7-seater SUV based on the Harrier. It will launch by the end of the current year. The H2X concept will spawn a Maruti Ignis and a Mahindra KUV100 rival that will share its ALFA platform with the Altroz. The production version, codenamed Tata X445, is expected to debut at Auto Expo 2020.

With the MY2019 update, the Tata Hexa has gained a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto. This unit has a resolution of 800 x 480 px. It was first introduced in the Tata Tigor, in October last year. Back to the Tata Hexa, the yearly update has brought a dual-tone roof option in two choices, namely Infinity Black and Titanium Grey.

Interior changes to the Tata Hexa for MY2019 are limited to the new infotainment system as standard and bright chrome AC vent surrounds and piano black steering wheel bezel in the XT, XTA and XT 4x4 grades. The line-up still includes the XM, XMA and XM+ grades, but the least-expensive XE grade has been taken down.

The deletion of the XE grade from the line-up means that the 2.2-litre Varicor 400 diesel engine that produces 156 PS at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1,750-2,500 rpm is standard now. It comes paired with a standard 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The XE grade was powered by that 2.2-litre Varicor 320 diesel engine (150 PS/320 Nm). This engine was coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The prices of the XM, XMA and XM+ grades have remained unchanged, while the XT, XTA and XT 4x4 grades have become INR 20,000* dearer.

Previously, as seen in the image above, Tata Motors was selling the Hexa at INR 12,57,252-17,97,043*. Now, the prices range from INR 12,99,000-18,16,548*. The motive behind the hike seems to be the very positioning of the Hexa, with a plan to ensure that it is seen as a product priced between the Harrier and the H7X in the future.

The most basic grade sees the biggest hike, of INR 41,748*. The rest of the range sees a uniform hike of INR 19,505*. The range has remained as is. XE, XM/XMA, XM+ and XT/XTA/XTA4X4 are the equipment lines. 7-seat configuration is standard, but there is a 6-seat option for customers selecting the XT/XTA/XT4X4 grade.

Smoked projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 19-inch alloy wheels, Benecke-Kaliko upholstery, ambient mood lighting (8 colours), 10-speaker JBL sound system, 8-way adjustable driver’s seat and cruise control are some of the main features of the Tata Hexa.

The Tata Hexa is available with the Varicor 320 and Varicor 400 2.2-litre diesel engines. The Varicor 320 engine produces 150 PS and 320 Nm of torque whereas the Varicor 400 develops 156 PS and 400 Nm of torque. 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic are the transmission choices. A Borg Warner-made AWD system is available only upon selecting the Varicor 400 engine and the 6-speed manual transmission.

While the Tata Harrier is a lifestyle SUV, the Tata Hexa is a family-oriented crossover. Tata Motors should likely continue selling the latter even after launching the Tata H7X, offering it as a relatively more affordable three-row SUV.

Maruti Wagon R

With a monthly sales average of 12,421 units*, the Maruti Wagon R has been the highest selling models in its segment. That said, the carmaker looks all set to launch the new-gen Wagon R on 23 January. Ahead of the introduction of the new model, the present version, which was manufactured in 2018, is being sold with some great offers. There is a cash discount of up to INR 30,000. Moreover, buyers can benefit from an exchange bonus of INR 35,000 on selling their old car to Maruti Suzuki. Furthermore, one can safely expect some dealer-level offers to further sweeten the deal. As a result, the base version of the current Wagon R can be bought at an effective ex-showroom price of INR  3.54 lakh**.

Maruti Celerio

With a monthly sales average of 8,381 units*, the Maruti Celerio is available with a cash discount of up to INR 30,000. Furthermore, the buyers can benefit from an exchange bonus of up to INR 30,000 on selling their old car to Maruti Suzuki. This leads to an effective ex-showroom base price of INR 3.66 lakh**. Hyundai Grand i10

With a monthly sales average of 10,817 units*, the popularity of the Hyundai Grand i10 is second only to that of the Maruti Swift (19,819 units*). That said, the current Grand i10 is in the last leg of its innings and will be replaced by an all-new model this festive season. To maintain a steady sales momentum until the advent of the new generation, the Grand i10 is being sold with lucrative offers. Moreover, coupled with special offers on the MY2018 stock, one benefits from a price cut. Buyers get a straight price cut of INR 30,000 and an exchange bonus of INR 20,000. This leads to an ex-showroom price of INR 4.36 lakh** for the base model.

Hyundai Xcent

With a monthly sales average of 3,840 units*, the Xcent has lost out to fresher cars Dzire and the Amaze. The company is said to be prepping an all-new model that will likely help the carmaker offer stiffer competition to its Japanese adversaries that is to come out early next year. The current version has been available with decent discounts, and the MY2018 can be bought at even more lucrative prices. One can easily benefit from a discount of up to INR 60,000 after factoring in the cash benefits and exchange bonus. Thanks to the offers, the Xcent can be bought at an effective ex-showroom base price of INR 5.03 lakh.

Hyundai Elantra

The premium D1-segment sedan (average monthly sale - 98 units*) in the company's product portfolio can be bought with benefits up to INR 65,000. Thanks to these discounts, the MY2018 Elantra is now available at an effective base price of INR 13.05 lakh**.

Honda WR-V

The leftover stock of the Honda WR-V (monthly sales average - 2,909 units*) is available with free first-year insurance worth INR 40,000. Additionally, the buyer can benefit from an exchange bonus of INR 20,000 on selling the old car to Auto Terrace. This leads to an effective base price of INR 7.19 lakh.

Tata Hexa

The leftover stock of the slow-selling Tata Hexa (average monthly sales - 713 units*) is available with a cash discount of up to INR 50,000. The MY2018 stock of the Mahindra KUV100 (monthly sales average - 1,118 units*) is available with a cash discount of INR 39,000. Additionally, the company is also offering an exchange bonus of INR 29,000. With net savings of INR 68,000, the smallest model in the company'ss lineup is available at a base price of INR 4.04 lakh**.

Mahindra Scorpio

The S5, S7, and S11 variants of the MY2018 Mahindra Scorpio (average monthly sales - 3,709 units) are available with a cash discount of INR 47,000 and an exchange bonus of INR 25,000. The S9 variant, on the other hand, is available with an exchange bonus of INR 25,000 along with dealer-level offers. Hence, buyers of the leftover stock of the popular SUV can drive home the base version for an effective base price of INR 9.38 lakh.

Mahindra XUV500

The Tata Nexon has been launched at an introductory price of TZS 45 million (INR 14.32 lakh), while the Tata Hexa costs TZS 81 million (INR 25.78 lakh) for the XT 4x4 and TZS 89 million (INR 28.33 lakh) for the XTA variants, respectively. The new models are available with attractive finance options at all Tata Motors dealerships across the country.

The gasoline-sipping Tata Nexon is powered by a 1.2-litre REVOTRON turbo-petrol engine that outputs a maximum power of 110 PS and a peak torque of 170 Nm. The diesel version is propelled by a 1.5-litre REVOTORQ diesel motor that outputs 110 PS and 260 Nm. Transmission options for both the engines include a 6-speed manual and a six-speed automated manual transmission (AMT).

The Tata Hexa is powered by a 2.2-litre Varicor 400 turbo-diesel motor that produces 156 PS and 400 Nm. The XTA variant features a six-speed automatic transmission, whereas the XT 4x4 model is equipped with a six-speed manual unit. The passenger vehicle lineup by Tata Africa Holdings consists the Tiago, Tigor, Bolt, Zest, Nexon, Storme, and Hexa.

Tata Motors has launched the Hexa in a new XM+ grade, for a price of INR 15.27 lakh*. The XM+ grade offers some additional features over those included in the mid-tier XM grade.

While the XM grade comes with 16-inch steel wheels, the XM+ grade sports newly designed 16-inch Charcoal Grey alloy wheels. That’s the only exterior styling difference between.

Inside, the new grade enhances the lifestyle SUV's premium factor with a soft-touch dashboard with HEXA branding and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Comfort and convenience additions include automatic climate control, an electric folding function for ORVMs and cruise control.

The Tata Hexa XM+ is safer too, thanks to the inclusion of automatic headlamps, front fog lamps, rain sensing wipers, reverse parking sensors and reverse parking camera. In all, this equipment line comes with 16 new features.

Under the hood, there’s the familiar 2.2-litre Varicor 400 turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 156 PS at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1,750-2,500 rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. An all-wheel-drive system is unavailable in this grade.

Tata Motors offers the Hexa XM+ exclusively in the 7-seat version. The 6-seat version is still limited to the XE and XT/XTA/XT4x4 grades. The company has three more launches lined-up for this festive season - new Tigor, Tiago JTP, and Tigor JTP. The first of these three is arriving on the 10th of this month, while the JTP models follow closer to Diwali.

The XT trim is the highest spec Hexa Tata offers. It comes loaded with features like 19-inch alloy wheels, projector headlights, LED DRLs, Harman sourced AVN with a 10-speaker JBL setup, ConnectNext apps suite, and second-row captain seats. Safety features include 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP and Hill Hold assist.

The Tata Hexa XT variant features the 2.2 L diesel in VARICOR400 spec, which has a max power output of 156 PS and a peak torque output of 400 Nm. The in-city trials of the autonomous Tata Hexa are being conducted on the streets of central Coventry. UK Autodrive is UK’s largest trial of connected and autonomous vehicle technology. The list of partners, aside from Tata Motors (TMETC), also includes Ford and Jaguar Land Rover.

These trials aims to explore the benefits of having cars that can “talk” to each other and their surroundings. Connected traffic lights, emergency vehicle warnings, and emergency braking alerts among are some of the technologies being trialled.

The fundamental purpose of UK Autodrive is to get connected and autonomous vehicle technology out onto UK roads, so the start of trialling on the streets of Coventry is clearly a major landmark both for the project and for the UK as a whole.

Apart from pursuing autonomous and connected car technologies, TMETC has also been actively developing EVs. In September this year, it revealed the Tata Tiago EV concept at LCV 2017 in the UK. This project will play a key role in the development of Tigor EV that Tata will supply to the Indian Government.

The Tata Hexa Downtown edition debuts a new Urban Bronze paint shade. The XE, XM, and XMA trims gain tan seat covers as part of the Absolute package while the Indulge package adds 16-inch alloy wheels. The top spec XT and XTA trims get features like two 10.1 inch Blaupunkt screen for the rear passengers as well as a dashboard-mounted head-up display that shows speed limit alerts, tyre pressure, and battery voltage information. Feature additions like Downtown badging, chrome pack suite, wireless charger, side steps, carpet set and car care kit are common across all trims.

In terms of pricing, the entry level Tata Hexa XE Downtown Edition is costlier than the standard variant by around INR 46,000. The Hexa Downtown will be sold in limited numbers.

The heads up display mounted on the dashboard has readouts for speed limit alerts, battery voltage, and tyre pressure monitoring system. Chrome pack suite includes chrome applique around the headlamps, side rub strips, and chrome ORVM casings. Two 10.1 inch Blaupunkt screens are included in the rear seat entertainment package. The special edition Hexa is available in a new Urban Bronze colour.

The familiar 2.2 L VARICOR diesel powers the Hexa. The XM, XT, XMA, and XTA trims get the VARICOR 400 producing 156 PS and 400 Nm mated to a 6-speed manula/6-speed automatic transmission. The base XE trim is powered by the VARICOR 320 producing 150 PS and 320 Nm paired with a 5-speed manual. 4×4 is restricted to the XT manual trim.

All Downtown Urban edition trims of the Hexa get chrome applique around the headlamps, tail lamps, sides and on the ORVMs, with Downtown badging. The package also includes side steps, wireless smartphone charging, a carpet set, and a car care kit.

The new Urban Bronze colour joins the five existing exterior paint shades of the Tata Hexa - Arizona Blue, Tungsten Silver, Pearl White, Platinum Silver, and Sky Grey.

Tata offers the standard Hexa in six trims including two automatic variants and one 4x4 variant. The top-spec XT trim features automatic headlamps, LED DRL, LED tail lamps, 19-inch alloy wheels, power folding ORVMs, and automatic climate control. There is a ConnectNext touchscreen infotainment system on offer with navigation support. The stock ICE setup includes a JBL sound system with 5 speakers, 4 tweeters and 1 subwoofer. Other features include cruise control, reverse parking sensors and camera, and six airbags.

Tata is yet to announce the price of the Tata Hexa Downtown Urban Edition.Currently, prices of the Tata Hexa start at INR 11.72 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base XE 4x2 trim going up to INR 17.19 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the range-topping XT 4x4.
