Tata Motors has announced the launch of two new variants in the Altroz line up, the XM and XM(S), priced attractively at INR 6.90 lakhs and INR 7.35 lakhs, respectively (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The introduction of high-end features in these variants including the electric sunroof in XM(S) makes Altroz the most affordable premium hatchback to be offered with a sunroof. The XM and XM(S) variants will be positioned in between the Altroz XE and the XM+, thereby broadening the appeal of this best-selling premium hatchback.

These variants will only be available in the 1.2 L Revotron petrol engine with manual transmission.

As an added advantage, the Tata Altroz will now offer four power windows and remote keyless entry as a standard feature across its manual petrol variants. Along with this, there are several additions to the existing Altroz 1.2 Revotron Petrol Manual variants as well.

Tata Altroz CNG has 2 cylinders for storing CNG hence doesn't compromise on the boot space. People can benefit from good fuel efficiency and also carry a good amount of luggage. Tata Motors is also providing advanced features such as Voice-assisted Electric Sunroof, Wireless charger and Air purifier.

The Tata Altroz CNG is offered across six variants, XE, XM+, XM+(S), XZ, XZ+(S)and XZ+O(S), and is available in four colour options, Opera Blue, Downtown Red, Arcade Grey and Avenue White. It also reduces the total cost of ownership further with 3 years / 100000 km as a standard warranty.

As for the pricing, the Tata Altroz CNG is available from Rs 7.55 lakh. Its top-end model has been priced at Rs 10.54 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Tata Altroz iCNG is India’s first twin-cylinder CNG technology that allowed the company to offer usable boot space. It has a total water capacity of 60 litres and is placed below the luggage area. The new Altroz will also start directly in CNG mode to ensure a hassle-free experience and no worries about switching the fuel mode.

Also, the Single Advanced ECU ensures a seamless and jerk-free drive experience while shifting from petrol to CNG mode or vice versa. There are additional safety features like thermal incident protection, gas leak detection feature and micro switch to ensure the car is switched off at the time of refuelling.

Customers can now book the Altroz iCNG at Rs 21,000. With deliveries commencing in May 2023, the Altroz iCNG is a strong testament to Tata Motors’ successful multi-powertrain strategy, making it the fourth powertrain option in the Altroz range now.

Tata Motors has refreshed its portfolio across powertrain options of Petrol, Diesel & CNG with new features which will deliver enhanced safety, drivability, comfort & convenience. The company has also increased its standard warranty of 2 Years/ 75,000 kms to 3 Years/ 1 lakh kms across the range, offering a hassle-free ownership experience.

Performance Upgrades

The low-end drivability of the Altroz and Punch have been enhanced such that they offer a much smoother experience in lower gears. The two models will also see Idle Stop Start as standard coming across all their variants, translating into better on-road mileage.

Reinforcing the trust in diesel engines and offering multiple choices to its customers, Tata Motors has upgraded the Revotorq diesel engines for both Altroz and Nexon. Additionally, the Nexon Diesel engine has been retuned to deliver better performance.

Furthermore, the new RDE-compliant engines are more responsive, and have been tuned such that they offer more efficiency to the customers.

Improved Safety & Drivability

TPMS has been added to the Tiago and Tigor offering better safety and a stress-free drive.

In line with customer expectations, this new range additionally boasts of a more serene in-cabin experience that has been elevated with a Quieter Cabin, Lower NVH and new features designed to make driving more comfortable, safer, and enjoyable.

The easy financing will be available at attractive interest rates starting as low as 7.80%. The scheme will provide up to 90% financing on road funding, with repayment terms of up to 7 years.

Customers can foreclose or provide partial payments at no additional fees. Tata Motors’ customers can also register for the finance options through Tata Motors’ dealers across the country.

The Tata Altroz DCA has an innovative technology with 45 patents and is the world’s first DCT with a planetary gear system. The Tata Altroz has always been appreciated for its futuristic design and style. Its Dark Edition is the new top of the line variant that comes in a Cosmo Black exterior body colour with dark tint finish on R16 alloy wheels and premium dark chrome across the hood. There’s also a dark mascot on the exterior.

On the inside, the new Tata Altroz Dark Edition features a granite black theme with metallic gloss black mid pad and the leatherette upholstery with deep blue tri-arrow perforations and deco blue stitching. Together they add to the premium-ness of the hatchback. The dark embroidery on the front headrest further accentuates the theme. The new Tata Altroz Dark will be available in the top variant XZ+ for petrol (NA and iTurbo).

Tata Motors is preparing to increase the prices across its passenger vehicle lineup. The company says that it has to take this step due to the steep climb in overall input costs. We are expecting the brand to make an official announcement regarding the price hike in the coming few weeks and the revised prices will come into effect from 1 August 2021.

In an official communication, Tata Motors said:

Tata Motors, India's leading vehicle manufacturer intends to shortly mark an appropriate increase in prices of its 'New Forever' range of Cars and SUVs. The steep climb in overall input costs, especially due to continuing rise in costs of essential raw materials including steel and precious metals, necessitates a transfer of at least some part of this increase to end customers.

This will be the third price hike this year that Tata Motors will be implementing in its passenger vehicle lineup. The company has previously increased the prices of its passenger vehicles in January and May.

In other news, Tata Motors has released a teaser video of the upcoming Tata Nexon EV Dark Edition. shows us the silhouette and illuminated headlamps of the electric vehicle with lightning striking in the background. The footage also does justice to the new model courtesy of the almost pitch-dark environment. It also says, “Electric #Dark is Here to Rule”. The Tata Nexon EV Dark Edition is slated to be launched on 7 July.

As per previous reports, the Tata Nexon EV Dark Edition has already started to arrive at select dealerships and some of them have also started to accept bookings of the new car. As for the pricing, it is being speculated that the Dark Edition model of the Nexon EV would be around INR 20,000 heavier on the pocket than the regular model. It is expected to be made available only with the higher-spec variants.

Mahindra XUV300

The Mahindra XUV300 operates in the hotly contested sub-compact SUV segment in India and has returned respectable sales figures for the company. The top-spec variant of the car comes with segment-first features including seven airbags, dual-zone climate control with memory function, front parking sensors, heated mirrors, and disc brakes for all four wheels. Other noteworthy features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a sunroof, cruise control, push-button start, leather seats, hill hold function and a seven-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring tech and navigation.

Mechanically, the car is powered by two engine options that come in the form of a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The petrol unit delivers 109bhp and 200Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the oil burner outputs 115bhp and 300Nm of torque. In the domestic market, the XUV300 locks horns with a few of the best selling cars in India including the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and the Tata Nexon.

Tata Nexon

In its latest update, the Tata Nexon got minor cosmetic changes that have majorly affected its persona. As with the electric version of the SUV, this one gets a revised hood for jacked-up muscularity, a tweaked grille, sharper headlamps with tri-arrow pattern DRLs and a new lower grille as well. The car sits on a set of new alloy wheels which adds more character, while its revised LED tail lamps give it a distinct look. In terms of safety, the Nexon boasts of a five-star NCAP safety rating ensuring owners and prospective buyers of a very safe car. This is backed up by a safety suite of dual-airbags, hill-hold assist, roll-over mitigation, ABS with EBD, traction control and more.

In its top-rung variant, the Tata Nexon gets features like engine push-start button, touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, cruise control, etc. Remarkably, it now gets added features like a digital instrument cluster, TPMS and a much-in-demand sunroof. Also, a notable addition in the new Nexon is the carmaker has come up with a new ‘Xpress Cool’ button owing to the hot and humid climatic conditions in India. In terms of powertrain, the Nexon gets a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that outputs 118bhp and 170Nm of torque. Transmission options for the engine include a 6-speed manual and an AMT. Alongside the petrol powertrains, also available is an oil burner that outputs 108bhp and 260Nm of torque. Transmission option on offer includes a manual and an AMT unit.

Renault Triber

The Renault Triber scored a four-star safety rating in the adult occupant protection and a 3-star rating in child occupancy protection at Global NCAP, making it the safest 7-seater tested to date in the mass segment in India. In its base-spec trim, the Triber comes equipped with two airbags, a seatbelt reminder system, speed alert warning, rear parking sensors and ABS with EBD. However, if you opt for top-spec trim of the Triber, you also get speed sensing door lock and impact sensing door unlock features along with two additional side airbags, taking the total count up to class leading 4 airbags in its top-spec trim.

14Earlier this year, the French carmaker has updated the Triber sub-compact MPV with a few subtle upgrades for the 2021 model year. These upgrades include the addition of new dual-tone colors on the top-spec RXZ trim and some new features on the inside as well. Powering the 7-seater MPV is the BR10 1.0-litre Dual VVT petrol engine. The naturally aspirated three-cylinder mill produces maximum power of 72hp at 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 96 Nm at 3,500 rpm. For transmission duties, there is either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

Tata Altroz

The Tata Altroz was introduced as the brand’s first-ever premium hatchback that goes against players like the Hyundai i20 and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In terms of features, the top-of-the-line XZ trim gets keyless entry and start, electric ORVMs, and cruise control. Also on offer are flat-bottom, tilt-adjustable steering with controls for audio and voice commands. The driver’s seat is height adjustable. There’s a single zone digital climate control system with rear AC vents along with a Harman touchscreen multimedia system complete with Andriod Auto and Apple Carplay.

In terms of powertrain, the car gets two petrol as well as one diesel engine option. The petrol engine comes in the form of a 1.2-litre unit that outputs 85 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. There's also a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine that puts out 110hp and 140Nm of torque. The diesel, on the other hand, is a 1.5-litre engine that delivers 89 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. Tata is offering a sole manual transmission option throughout the range. Also, Altroz could soon get a DCT gearbox, brand's first dual clutch gearbox.

Tata Tiago

In its most recent update, the Tata Tiago got quite a few comprehensive updates over its predecessor. On the outside, the hatchback gets new front bumper, headlamps and a new grille. In addition to this, the car also gets dual-tone alloy wheels, a black roof and black ORVMs with turn indicators.

On the inside, the new Tiago gets a mild update over its predecessor for freshness. The most major update of which is a fully digital instrument cluster as well as a new touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside other connectivity options like USB and AUX-IN. In terms of powertrain, the Tiago gets a BS-VI compliant 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 84bhp and 113Nm of torque. The engine can be had in both five-speed manual and five-speed AMT options.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

On its way to the only-petrol iteration, Maruti Suzuki kept the exterior updates to a bare minimum. The Brezza’s nose now has a generous dose of chrome on its grille, which is complemented by a pair of projector headlamps and LED DRLs. The Vitara Brezza is a slightly bigger car than the Kiger at 3,995mm long, 1,790mm wide 1,640 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,500mm. Dominating the dash is the large 7-inch touchscreen ‘Smartplay studio’ system, below which there is an uncluttered layout of sleek air-con controls and the USB, AUX and charging ports. Also, plastic quality remains the same, which is acceptable for this segment (Hyundai Venue sets the segment standard).

In terms of safety, the car comes with features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. While the pre-facelift Vitara Brezza was offered with a diesel engine, the facelifted SUV comes with a 1.5-litre petrol unit. This engine puts out 105PS of power and 138Nm of torque. It comes mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission option or a 4-speed AT gearbox. The Vitara Brezza is offered with a 2WD system. Prices for the Maruti Vitara Brezza starts at INR 7.39 lakh (ex-showroom) for the LXI variant.

Tata is offering a sole manual transmission option throughout the range. Also, Altroz could soon get a DCT gearbox, brand's first dual clutch gearbox.

Tata Nexon

The Tata Nexon competes in the hotly-contested compact SUV segment against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet  among others. Despite this, Nexon is turning out to be a success for Tata becoming its bestseller vehicle and also among top 3 compact SUVs in India. On the outside, it features sharp and sporty headlamps and rounded-off grille. The vehicle gets large air intakes and contrasting skid plates. In its latest version, the car sits on a set of newly designed alloy wheels.

The Nexon features an semi-digital instrument cluster along with floating infotainment screen with mobile connectivity features as well. Apart from the new upholstery, the Nexon’s updated cabin also packs in new equipment to get it up to the mark with the competition. This includes a sunroof, fast mobile charger, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control. The Tata Nexon is powered by 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 118bhp 170Nm of torque and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that delivers 108bhp and 260Nm of torque. Transmission options include the same old six-speed manual gearbox and an AMT unit. Tata Nexon also distinguishes itself as the only sub-compact SUV to be also as an EV.

Tata Tiago

Like mentioned above, it was the Tata Tiago that changed the brand's destiny in India and has turned out to be quite a success. In its most recent update, the Tata Tiago got quite a few comprehensive updates over its predecessor. On the outside, the hatchback gets new front bumper, headlamps and a new grille. In addition to this, the car also gets dual-tone alloy wheels, a black roof and black ORVMs with turn indicators. On the inside, the new Tiago gets a mild update over its predecessor for freshness. The most major update of which is a fully digital instrument cluster as well as a new touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside other connectivity options like USB and AUX-IN.

In terms of powertrain, the Tiago is powered by a sole 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 84bhp and 113Nm of torque. The engine can be had in both five-speed manual and five-speed AMT options. Tata Tiago also received a turbo model under partnership with Jayem in the past but it didn't turn out be a success. Tata is now planning another turbo edition, with better tuning to steering and suspension.

Tata Tigor

Last on our list is the Tata Tigor, the Tiago based compact sedan, and also the most affordable sedan of India going up against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze. Along with the Tiago, the Tata Tigor also received a substantial update with a fresh set of features and fresh design updates. Exterior-wise, the Tigor is based on the IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy. The vehicle takes inspiration from the Altroz with the protruding grille and wraparound headlamps. The front bumper is tweaked with a pair of large horizontal louvres for air-vents and there is a redesigned fog-lamp housing which now also integrates a pair of newly designed DRLs.

The interior is more or less similar to its predecessor except for new upholstery, updated instrument cluster and new features. Under the hood, the Tigor is also powered by a sole 1.2-litre petrol engine. The petrol engine produces 84bhp and 114Nm. Transmission options include the same five six-speed manual gearboxes and an AMT unit.

This rendering of the Tata Altroz has been shared on the Rubber Tripper Instagram page. The most comprehensive modification on the exterior of this Tata Altroz is of course its aerodynamic package. The front end of this Altroz rendering gets a bespoke wide-body bumper with a massive, gaping air dam right in the middle. The bumper also features a splitter and winglets at the edges that help with aerodynamic downforce. Then there are vents on the bonnet and even a roof scoop that aid cooling.

Over to the sides, the Altroz can be seen wearing side skirts in this rendering. Side skirts are not just cosmetic upgrades that give a car a hunkered-down look, but they actually help in managing the air flow underneath the car, further increasing aerodynamic downforce. At the rear, one definitely cannot ignore the massive roof-mounted spoiler that sticks out quite a bit and even features extended bits down the sides. Lastly, in true rally fashion, the white multi-spoke wheels wrapped in low profile rubber complete the look.

This being a rally car, there have been plenty of weight saving measures, most of which is evident inside the car. The interior of this Altroz has been completely stripped down to its bare metal, removing the back seats, most of the interior panels and all unnecessary equipment. Instead, it now features a roll cage and sports seats. More weight saving measures are evident in the windows, which are now made of fiber glass. Lastly, the Altroz in this rendering has been finished in a shade of red with a bespoke livery.

As stock, in the real world, Tthe Altroz is currently available in seven trim levels - XE, XM, XM+, XT, XZ, XZ(O) and XZ+. The turbo-petrol engine is available only with the top four trims. The Tata Altroz gets three engine options under its hood - an 86hp, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol; a 90hp, 1.5-litre diesel; and a 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol. All these engines are currently only available with a manual gearbox. Tata Motors will be debuting a DCT automatic gearbox in the Altroz range in the near future. Prices for the Tata Altroz currently range between INR 5.69 lakh and INR 9.45 lakh (ex-showroom).

There are a lot of reasons behind the popularity of Tata Altroz. Right now, it is the safest premium hatchback one can get in the Indian market because it has scored a 5-star rating at the Global NCAP crash test. It is offered with three different powertrain options. The first one is a 1.2-litre NA petrol mill, which develops power and torque outputs of 86 PS and 113 Nm. The second one is a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 90 PS and 200 Nm of peak torque. It also derives power from a more powerful 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which churns out 110 PS of peak power and 140 Nm of twisting force. All three engine options come coupled to a 5-speed MT.

Reports suggest that the carmaker is also working on a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is expected to hit the Indian shores in the coming months. On the other hand, the Hyundai i20 also gets propelled by three different powertrain options. It is powered by a 1.2-litre NA petrol (88 PS/115 Nm), 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel (100 PS/ 240 Nm) and 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit (120 PS/172 Nm). The NA petrol mill comes paired with a 5-speed MT or a CVT, while diesel trim is offered with a 6-speed MT. The turbo petrol engine comes mated to a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT. The Tata hatchback is priced between Rs 5.69 lakh to Rs 9.54 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and the Hyundai i20 has priced from Rs 6.85 lakh to Rs 11.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). One can see that the Tata Altroz is significantly cheaper than the new-gen Hyundai i20.

In terms of styling, the Hyundai i20 and the Tata Altroz clearly edge ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. While styling can be subjective and different cars look more attractive from certain angles, the Baleno is the most dated here and desperately feels in need for an update. In comparison, the i20 and the Altroz look much more stylish and contemporary. The Altroz really impressed us with its styling when it was first launched, but in light of the new i20, it is the latter that comes across as most stylish.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs vs Hyundai i20 vs Tata Altroz - Interior and Features

As for the interiors, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno faces the same issue as its exterior styling. It feels the most dated and is far behind in terms of features as compared to its rivals. The i20, on the other hand, feels the most techy and modern and is the best equipped as well. However, the all-black theme of the cabin robs away some aesthetics of the i20. In terms of design, it is the Altroz that has the most likeable interior. With a beautiful layered design and multiple textures and colors, the Altroz gets the upper hand here.

As for their features, the i20 is way ahead of the competition. It has the largest infotainment screen in the segment at 10.25-inches. It also gets a fully digital instrument cluster, connected car tech, ambient lighting, and much more. However, for these features, it is also the most expensive in this lot. The Altroz is next best feature loaded car in this comparison. It gets features like rain sensing wipers, semi-digital instrument cluster, cruise control, connected car tech, JBL sound system and much more. The ALtroz is very good value-for-money for the features it has to offer. The Baleno does not come with any standout feature but is at least equipped the essentials that's standard across all three models.

As for space in the second row, it is the i20 that is the most spacious, even for a 6-ft tall person. As shown the video, the i20 has most legroom and headroom. The Baleno comes second and the Altroz feels the most tight in terms of space in the second row. Both the i20 and Altroz get rear AC vents while the Baleno does not. As for their boot space, the Altroz has the largest boot, followed by the Baleno and then the i20.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs vs Hyundai i20 vs Tata Altroz - Engine Performance

Under the hood, the Baleno is just offered with one petrol engine option. Meanwhile, both the Altroz and the i20 are offered with as many as three engine options. The Baleno is powered by a sole 83PS 1.2L NA petrol engine. Meanwhile, the engine options on the Hyundai i20 include a 83PS 1.2L NA petrol engine, a 120PS 1.0L turbo-petrol engine and a 100PS 1.5L diesel engine. As for the Altroz, it comes with a 83PS 1.2L, three-cylinder NA petrol engine, a 110PS 1.2L three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and a 90PS 1.5L diesel engine. All three cars here in the video come with the 1.2L NA petrol engine.

In terms of performance with their 1.2L engines, the Baleno feels the most spirited, primarily because it is the lightest of the lot. The i20 has decent performance and will keep most people happy. Meanwhile, the 1.2L engine on the Altroz feels really lacking. Even with its turbo-petrol engine, the Altroz still lags behind the i20 turbo. Its a similar case with the diesel engine as well. So in terms of engine and performance, it is the i20 that edges ahead.

We have always loved the Altroz for its superior ride and handling balance and it remains untouched in this regard. It feels the most stable at speed and feels confident around corners. The i20 strikes a fair balance between handling and ride quality and while it does not excel in any particular front, it does nt disappoint either. As for the Baleno, although it has a good ride quality, it is very poor in terms of handling and dynamics.

All three models have been featured in their top-spec trims here in this video. The Baleno is most affordable of the lot at about INR 8 lakh (ex-showroom), but for that money you will have to live with a really dated car. The Tata Altroz is priced at about INR 8.50 lakh (ex-showroom) and is great value for money. The i20 is the most expensive here at about INR 10 lakh (ex-showroom) but is packaged well enough to justify its premium price tag.
