A celebratory event took place with representatives of the Vietnamese and Czech governments alongside Škoda’s local distribution and production partner, TC Group.

Skoda Kodiaq Vietnam Entry

Škoda Auto projects a rapid expansion of the dealer network to as many as 30 partners and an annual sales potential of over 40,000 units beyond 2030. The first models, starting with the Karoq and Kodiaq, will be imported from Europe. Local CKD production, planned to start next year, aims to leverage synergies due to the country’s proximity to India. Škoda views Vietnam as a gateway to the promising ASEAN region.

First models imported from Europe in 2023, start of local CKD production in 2024

Škoda has a well-defined roadmap for the Vietnamese market, with plans to expand its model portfolio in response to customer preferences. The Octavia and Superb models are slated for importation to Vietnam in the medium term. Additionally, the all-electric Enyaq family is being introduced to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles among Vietnamese consumers.

Skoda Vietnam Entry

Starting in the second half of 2024, Škoda will be tapping into significant regional synergies. By then, the first Kushaq vehicles will have been exported from the Pune facility in India to Vietnam for assembly from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits, with the Slavia set to follow in 2025. Construction of a production line at the Viet Hung Industrial Park in Quang Ninh province by Škoda’s local partner TC Group is already underway. Based on market trends, there are ambitions to ramp up production, potentially assembling as many as 27,000 vehicles annually after 2027.

Skoda Karoq Could Soon Return To India As A Locally Assembled Model https://indianautosblog.com/skoda-karoq-could-soon-return-to-india-p322405 Fri, 22 Jan 2021 12:05:58 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322405 Skoda launched the Karoq in India last year but on account of being a CBU, only 1,000 units of the Skoda Karoq were allotted in the first batch. Although it was decently expensive, Skoda soon managed to sell out all 1,000 units of the Karoq in just five months by October 2020. Since then, the model was temporarily dropped from the carmaker's official website. Now, a recent RTO document suggests that the Karoq could soon be making a comeback.

Skoda Karoq Exterior Indian Spec
A recent RTO document suggests that the Skoda Karoq could soon be making a comeback in India.

But there's more good news than just the Skoda Karoq making a comeback. The earlier batch was brought into India as a full import but Skoda could be assembling the Karoq in India this time. Skoda Director Zac Hollis had previously hinted at such a possibility and given the popularity of the Karoq, this could very well be on the cards. Skoda launched the Karoq in India for a price of INR 24.99 lakh but if it is locally assembled this time around, prices could go down by a significant margin. The Karoq's sibling from Volkswagen - the T-Roc - too was sold out in 2020 and VW recently announced that the T-Roc will soon make a comeback as well.

The Karoq was sold in India in a single fully loaded trim and it came very well equipped with features. On the inside, the Skoda Karoq packed features like panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, 8-inch Amundsen infotainment system with sat-nav, 12-way electrically adjustable driver seat including lumbar support with three memory function, 8-speaker sound system and configurable ambient lighting.

Skoda Karoq Interiors
The Karoq was sold in India in a single fully loaded trim and it came very well equipped with features.

On the safety front, Skoda equips the Karoq in India with features like 9 airbags, headlight washers, ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), EDS (Electronic Differential Lock), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and iBuzz driver alert system. Under the hood, the Karoq was powered by a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine that produced 150hp and 250Nm of peak torque. The engine came mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission, driving the front-wheels. The Karoq can sprint from 0-100 kph in 9 seconds and it tops out at 202 kph.

The Skoda Karoq competes with the likes of Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson in India. It is however not known at this point as to when the Karoq will be brought back to the country. It could even take some while. The company has said that their focus is currently on their first made-in-India product, the Kushaq, and it is slated for a mid-2021 launch. The Karoq could thus arrive after that.

Skoda Announces 2.5% Price Hike For All Models from January 2021 https://indianautosblog.com/skoda-price-hike-fom-january-2021-p322173 Wed, 30 Dec 2020 03:30:27 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322173 As the year is drawing to a close, several manufacturers have announced a hike in the price of their vehicles. Previously, Maruti Suzuki had announced that they would be hiking the price of their vehicles from January 2021. Later, RenaultHyundai and Kia, Volkswagen and even Mahindra announced a price hike on their vehicles effective from January 2021. Now, Skoda too have announced that they will be increasing prices across their model line-up by up to 2.5%. The price revision will be effective on the vehicles from January, 2021.

Skoda's lineup in India currently includes the Rapid sedan, the Octavia RS 254, the Karoq SUV and the Superb sedan. Of these, only the Rapid is locally built here in India. All three other cars either come to India as CKDs or as full imports. Unlike Volkswagen, who only hiked the prices of the locally-made Polo and Vento, Skoda's price hike will be applicable on all four vehicles that the company sells here in India. Earlier in November, VW Group's luxury brand Audi also announced a price hike across its range.

Skoda Auto India spokesperson said,

"There has been a surge in the cost of our inputs for production due to significant volatility in the global commodity prices and foreign exchange rates in recent times. SKODA AUTO India has been absorbing these incremental costs, all this while, but is now considering a price increase of up to 2.5 per cent with effect from 1st January 2021 across its model range."

Skoda Price Hike
Skoda have announced that they will be increasing prices across their model line-up by up to 2.5%.

Price revisions towards the end of the year have almost become a norm in the automotive industry. Almost every manufacturer marginally increases the price of their vehicles at this time of the year. This price hike comes about due to increasing input costs across the spectrum, including input costs for steel, aluminum, plastics and other affiliated cost increases during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, prices anyway saw a strong uptick due to the transition to the BS6 norms. The lockdown and the pandemic also caused supply-chain disruptions for components and raw materials, which further contributed the uptick in prices of vehicles.

Going ahead into 2021, both Volkswagen and Skoda will be going into a product offensive strategy. The first model to come out of VW Group's India 2.0 Project will be the production-spec Skoda Vision IN which will then be followed by the Volkswagen Taigun. These two are very important products for both the brands in India. The later half of 2021 will also see the next-gen Vento from Volkswagen and the next-gen Rapid from Skoda in India.

The new compact SUV costs INR 25 lakh* (INR 24,99,000*) in our market.

Skoda Karoq Indian Launch
Candy White, Magnetic Brown, Lava Blue, Quartz Grey, Brilliant Silver and Magic Black are the Skoda Karoq's colour options.

The Skoda Karoq is the younger sibling of the Skoda Kodiaq. It is closely related to the VW Tiguan that has been temporarily discontinued in India. Sitting on the same MQB platform as the German SUV, the new compact SUV from the Czech Republic is the replacement for the Skoda Yeti.

The Skoda Karoq is available in India in only the Style grade, with a lot of attractive features included as standard. LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, LED tail lamps and 17-inch Aronia dual-tone Anthracite alloy wheels are the exterior highlights of the new compact SUV.

On the inside, the Skoda Karoq packs features like panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, 8-inch Amundsen infotainment system with sat-nav, 12-way electrically adjustable driver seat including lumbar support with three memory function, 8-speaker sound system and configurable ambient lighting. On the safety front, Skoda equips the Karoq in India with features like 9 airbags, headlight washers, ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), EDS (Electronic Differential Lock), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and iBuzz driver alert system.

Skoda Karoq Interior India
The Skoda Karoq compact SUV is available in India in only the Style trim.

The Skoda Karoq is 4,382 mm long, 1,841 mm wide and 1,624 mm tall. It has a 2,638 mm wheelbase. Its boot capacity is 521 litres and can be increased to 1,630 litres by folding down the rear seatbacks.

A 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine with ACT is standard in the Skoda Karoq in India. It’s a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit that produces 150 PS of maximum power at 5,000-6,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,500-3,500 rpm. A 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission sends drive to the front wheels. A 0-100 km/h sprint takes 9 seconds, while the top speed is 202 km/h.

The 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine features Active Cylinder Technology, an automatic cylinder shut-off system. ACT shuts down the two middle cylinders when engine load is low, which results in reduced fuel consumption. The fuel economy rating of the Skoda Karoq is 14.49 km/l. This rating is as per testing under the European WLTP test cycle (combined). There’s no ARAI-rated mileage because this compact SUV hasn’t been homologated in our market.

The Skoda Karoq is a compact SUV and the spiritual successor to the Skoda Yeti that was sold in India but struggled due to its crossover genes. The Skoda Karoq belongs to the same class as the VW Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier.

The Skoda Karoq looks almost like a mini-Skoda Kodiaq. It comes equipped with features like full LED headlamps, LED fog lamps with cornering function, C-shaped LED tail lamps, roof rails, 18-inch Trinity alloy wheels and body cladding all around on the outside.

The interior of the Skoda Karoq also seeks inspiration from the bigger model Skoda Kodiaq, which is evident from the design of the dashboard and centre console. The Skoda Karoq is made in a wide range of mechanical configurations globally. In India, it will be offered in only one. Under the hood, the Indian-spec compact SUV will have Volkswagen Group's staple 1.5L TSI-Evo petrol engine linked to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The turbocharged petrol engine will produce 150 and 250 Nm of torque. An AWD system will not be included, which means that the drive will go to only the front wheels.

The Skoda Karoq will be imported to India in CBU form from Czech Republic, and so, it will likely cost over INR 25 lakh (ex-showroom). Local assembly will be considered later if there is enough demand in our market. For the record, the Skoda Kodiaq is a locally assembled import here.

The Skoda Karoq's prices could start at somewhere around INR 26-28 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Skoda Karoq will be a part of Skoda's Auto Expo 2020 line-up. For those new to the name, it's a C-segment SUV like the VW Tiguan and the Skoda Yeti's spiritual successor. Also, it will be imported to India via the CBU route without local homologation, thanks to the revised import rules that allow automakers to import as many as 2,500 CBUs/CKDs in India without the need for local homologation. Skoda is leveraging the same policy to launch the Octavia RS 245 also here.

Based on the same MQB modular platform as the SEAT Ateca and the VW Tiguan, the Skoda Karoq slots below the Skoda Kodiaq mid-size SUV. Currently, it is available with a number of engine options including the 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI petrol, 115 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel, 150 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel and 190 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel. 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic are the transmission choices. An AWD system is available in select configurations.

The Indian-spec Skoda Karoq is likely to be offered with the 1.5L TSI petrol engine, a 7-speed DCT and an AWD system all as standard. The Skoda Karoq will technically be a rival to the Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass. But it will be priced much higher, maybe at around INR 26-28 lakh (ex-showroom). A year or so after the launch, this model might be locally assembled to lower the price.

The Skoda Karoq's prices could start at somewhere around INR 28 lakh (ex-showroom).

The restructured import rules allow carmakers to bring in as much as 2,500 vehicles in India without the need for local homologation. This is encouraging carmakers to launch new imported products. Hence, Skoda is planning a slew of new CBU models, and the Karoq will be one of them.

The Skoda Karoq is based on the same MQB modular platform as the VW Tiguan and SEAT Ateca. In terms of positioning, it sits below the Skoda Kodiaq. It is currently available with a slew of engine options including 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI petrol, 115 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel, 150 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel and 190 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel units. It has motivated many automakers to launch a C-SUV in the country or localise their C-SUV in the future for competitive pricing. However, several global C-SUVs are still not sold in our market. Here are top 5 Jeep Compass rivals we wish were sold in India.

Peugeot 3008

Arguably one of the most stylish European C-SUVs, the Peugeot 3008 entered into its second generation in 2017. What works in the case of Peugeot 3008 is the fact that while along with the traditional silhouette of a conventional SUV, it has got a number of distinctive design cues which make it look very unique and contemporary.

The inverted comma-shaped full LED headlamps along with dual tone roof and LED tail lamps in blackened housings give it a striking appeal on the outside. At the same time, the interior looks even more wonderful, thanks to an unconventional design with almost squared steering wheel, raised full TFT instrument console and pop-up style infotainment system among others.

Peugeot offers the 3008 with a total of four engine options: 1.2-litre 132 PS turbocharged petrol, 1.5-litre 131 PS diesel, 1.6-litre 181 PS turbocharged petrol and 2.0-litre 177 PS diesel. While the 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel are offered with both the 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic gearboxes, the 1.6-litre turbo petrol and 2.0-litre diesel are offered only with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Nissan Qashqai

Currently in its second generation, the Nissan Qashqai looks much like a scaled-down X-Trail. It's Europe's best-selling C-SUV.

The Nissan Qashqai is loaded with features like Nappa leather upholstery, electrically adjustable and heated front seats with memory function, adaptive LED headlamps with daytime running LEDs, panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control and a premium 8-speaker audio system from BOSE.

On offer for Nissan Qashqai is a range of powertrain options. Starting off with the petrol engine first, the 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol is available in two states of tune – 140 PS/240 Nm and 160 PS/270 Nm. While the former is available with only a 6-speed gearbox, the more powerful version is offered with 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT automatic options.

The diesel engine options include a 1.5-litre unit (115 PS/285 Nm) available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT automatic gearboxes and a 1.7-litre diesel unit (150 PS/340 Nm) available with both 6-speed MT and a CVT.

Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 was Toyota’s first attempt at a C-SUV that offered the stance of an SUV and the driving dynamics of a sedan in a single package. Over the years, the RAV4 has become much sharper and bigger, and in its current, fifth generation, it has an imposing stance and contemporary styling in and out. It is worth noting that this model is the world's best-selling SUV.

2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid Images Front Three Quarter

The latest Toyota RAV4’s angular design is complemented with the sleek and more aggressive front fascia and angular headlamps and tail lamps. It is offered with features like full LED lights at front and rear, full TFT instrument console, panoramic glass roof and a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system.

The Toyota RAV4 is available with a choice of two engine options, both of which are petrol-powered. One is a 2.0-litre engine that produces 170 PS of power and 203 Nm of torque, the bigger, while the other is a 2.5-litre engine that makes 209 PS of power and 249 Nm of torque. The latter is also available in hybrid version, which makes 222 PS of power and 279 Nm of torque.

The Toyota RAV4 is under consideration for India.

Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage is in its fourth generation currently. It's a mechanical cousin of the Hyundai Tucson, which is sold in India. India will directly get the next-gen Kia Sportage, although the Indian audience has already been made familiar with the nameplate and attracted to it with the brand's TVCs showing the existing model.

The Kia Sportage is offered with features like full LED headlamps and tail lights, black leather upholstery and a touchscreen infotainment system with loads of connectivity options. The next-gen Kia Sportage will likely be made in a 7-seat version as well. Expect it to be locally manufactured and be sold in even the 7-seat version here.

Skoda Karoq

The Skoda Karoq is the successor to the Skoda Yeti, which was sold in India. It was planned to be launched in India this year but the project has been postponed to 2020. It will likely be a CBU import costing easily over INR 25 lakh (ex-showroom) and be sold in limited numbers, not more than 2,500 units annually. In the meantime, Volkswagen Group is likely going to replace the VW Tiguan with the VW Tiguan Allspace in the country to ensure that there's no market cannibalisation.

In terms of size, styling and dimensions, the Skoda Karoq might not be as intimidating and huge as other SUVs in this list. However, this soft-roader from Skoda does pack luxury and premium finish in abundance, with its impeccable build quality and premium equipment like virtual cockpit, panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats with heating and memory functions and 10-speaker Canton audio system. 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI petrol, 115 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel, 150 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel and 190 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel are the engine options.

Skoda Karoq to be a CBU import in India - Report https://indianautosblog.com/skoda-karoq-to-be-a-cbu-import-in-india-report-p317399 Mon, 27 May 2019 11:27:04 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=317399 The Skoda Karoq, a VW Tiguan-like C-SUV and the successor to the Skoda Yeti, is arriving in India by early 2020. While products in this segment are generally imported in CKD kits for local assembly, a new report says that the Skoda Karoq will be a CBU import.

Skoda Karoq Showcased At Iaa 2017
The Skoda Karoq, a C-segment SUV like the VW Tiguan, is the successor to the Skoda Yeti.

Skoda needs to be sure that the Karoq will bring volumes enough for local assembly to be feasible. Thanks to the new import norms, it will be able to import this SUV without having to homologate it in India. The import will be capped to 2,500 units a year, though. However, should the market present a strong demand, it can homologate the product and start locally assembling it to reduce the price(s).

Skoda's studies had shown that the Karoq would be too expensive for India, and so, it had put the launch plan on hold. However, the relaxed import norms that allow automakers to test market a model before deciding on the expensive and time-consuming process of homologation here, it has put the plan back in action.

The Skoda Karoq shares the MQB modular platform with the VW Tiguan and Seat Ateca among many other Volkswagen Group models. It sits below the Skoda Kodiaq mid-size SUV. It is available with 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI petrol, 115 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel, 150 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel and 190 PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel engines. 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic are the transmission choices. An AWD system is available in select configurations.

The Karoq can be viewed as the spiritual successor of the Yeti, and due to the high customer demand, it is now made at both Skoda factories.

While the second of these, which is the company's MQB-AO-IN-based SUV, will arrive in 2021, the Skoda Karoq will be introduced in India in 2020. Speaking on the launch timeline of the premium SUV in an exclusive interaction with IndianAutosBlog.com, Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director, Skoda Auto India Pvt Ltd, said -

Karoq is still being evaluated. It is one of the products that is being evaluated currently. If it comes, it will be through the CKD route.

On being asked if the new model would launch in India in 2019, Mr Boparai confirmed that the company plans to wait for BSVI emission norms to come into force in April 2020 before releasing the new model. Unveiled in May 2017, the Skoda Karoq is the spiritual successor of the Yeti, positioned below the Kodiaq. It entered production in Europe in July 2017 and due to the rush, Skoda, since January 2018, also makes it at the second plant.

The India-spec Skoda Karoq is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI turbocharged diesel engine that outputs a maximum power of 150 PS. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic unit. AWD hardware is standard. That said, the transmission option(s) and availability of AWD in India will be revealed only close to the SUV's launch date.

Aside from the announcement of the Skoda India 2.0 project revolving around the MQB A0 IN, the company revealed plans to launch the Skoda Karoq in India.

Skoda Karoq india launch in 2019
The Skoda Karoq will be launched in India in 2019.

Skoda disclosed its intention to have three SUVs in the Indian market by 2021. The first one is the Skoda Kodiaq already on sale here, while the third will be the MQB A0 IN-based SUV confirmed to debut in the second half of 2020. Before that, however, the company will introduce another SUV. The product in question is the Skoda Karoq.

Unveiled in May last year, the Skoda Karoq replaces the Yeti in the company's European lineup. It sits below the Skoda Kodiaq. In January, a report emerged stating that the Skoda Karoq will arrive in India in 2019. When launched, the SUV would rival the Hyundai Tucson and top-end variants of the Jeep Compass. The upcoming new Honda CR-V could turn out to be a potential rival as well.

The India-spec Skoda Karoq is likely to use a 150 PS 2.0 L TDI diesel engine. It pairs with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG automatic. AWD is offered as standard. The transmission choice(s) and the availability of AWD in India will be revealed closer to its launch date. The Skoda Karoq for international markets also employs 1.0 L TSI petrol, 1.5 L TSI petrol, and 1.6 L TDI diesel engines. In its fully-loaded form, the Skoda Karoq features full-LED headlamps, LED fog lights with cornering function, 18-inch alloy wheels, C-shaped LED tail lights, panoramic sliding roof, virtual instrument cluster and 10-speaker Canton sound system.

Volkswagen will be investing EUR 1 billion (INR 7,900 crore) primarily between 2019 and 2021 to realise these goals.
